Why I Left Medium

My reasons for my absence

I have been away from Medium for the past month or so. Let me tell you the reasons why.

1. Energy Input vs Reward

When I joined Medium back in April, the prospects looked far rosier than they were. I wasn’t aware of how competitive and unfair Medium was as a platform. Ever since I joined, I have aimed to post something new every day. The month after I joined is when things took a turn. Upon the introduction of the $500, I felt as though I was back at school. Those of us who create high-quality pieces had them discarded because of the views we received.

Medium became inundated with articles by fellow writers insulting those who did not receive a bonus by saying we didn’t deserve it. The entire website has become an unfair competition, and as adults, we should be above pedestrian things like this. Ultimately, I began to feel disillusioned with this platform and thought that I should look elsewhere for recognition.

2. The Paywall

To view a Medium article, you have to subscribe. The one failure of Medium is that the creators neglect to realise that people want to expend minimum effort to read an article. If they have to pay to see a piece they may not even like, they WILL consume news elsewhere.
